I’ve been thinking more than a little lately about just what it is I do at Web Directions. On one level the answer is pretty straightforward–we run conferences for web and digital folks. But the more important question is what do we do for you and folks like you? Those who visit our site, attend […]

Eliminating XSS by adopting Trusted Types Year after year, Cross-Site Scripting (XSS) continues to be the most expensive type of web vulnerability found in bug bounty programs. The most common variant of XSS occurs on the client side, when untrusted user input is passed to dangerous DOM APIs. Trusted Types is a novel web browser […]

ARIA Spec for the Uninitiated Specs are usually not very fun, but I have learned that reading the ARIA specs is important to fully understand all the various options that are available. In this presentation, I will walk you through the ARIA spec and show you how to make the most out of it to create custom components with ARIA.

Accessibility has been a core focus of our conferences since the very beginning, with something like 20% of our very first conference way back in 2004 focussed specifically on the topic (sadly the site for that conference is lost to the sands of time). And all these years later in 2021 we’ve come somewhat full […]

Making Motion Inclusive Let’s clear the air about animation and inclusive design. It’s a common misconception that things like inclusive design and accessibility only come at the cost of design details like motion, but that’s just not the case. Whether it’s microinteractions, animated illustrations, or larger animated experiences, a little care and consideration can go a long way towards getting the best of both worlds.

In this session Val will show you how to build animated interactions with inclusivity in mind from the start. We’ll discuss how to apply web accessibility guidelines to modern web animation, when and how to implement reduced motion, and approaches to building up animated interactions for a solid standards base.

The 2021 edition of dealing with files on the Web Thomas Steiner, Developer Relations Engineer Google The file input element and the download attribute on anchor elements used to be the primary way for working with files on the Web. Not anymore! In this presentation, I will show modern ways of dealing with files in […]

May 20 has, over the last decade, become Global Accessibility Awareness Day, a day “to get everyone talking, thinking and learning about digital access/inclusion and people with different disabilities”. The last few weeks I’ve been providing a bit of assistance, and some of the technology we developed for our online conferences to a new event […]

When I first started developing for the web, networks were glacially slow by today’s standards. In the early to mid 1990s a dialup modem speed of 14400bps (bits per second) was common, a 56K (kilo bits per second) a very fast connections. That’s bits, so divide by 8 to get bytes per second–we’re talking 1800-7,000 […]

REA really is one of Australia’s startup success stories, though they’re far from just Australia based, with operations around the world. I’ve got a bit of a litmus test for whether I’d recommend someone thinking about a role at an organisation, and it’s about who works there, and whether folks tend to work there for an […]

Yes, I admit, I’ve been less than assiduous about this ‘weekly’ (more ‘weakly’ amirite?) newsletter for a while now. 2020. Programming a series of 6 conferences, trying to be an ok parent in these times. Plenty of excuses. Let’s see if we can’t get the show back on the road. As always I’ve still been […]
