Happy 30th World Wide Web - Web Directions

Happy 30th World Wide Web

12th March, 2019 @johnallsopp

Today CERN is marking the 30th anniversary of the World Wide Web.

It’s not the 30th anniversary of the public announcement of the Web, or the first browser, or indeed anything public about the Web. Rather, it’s the 3oth anniversary of this

This proposal concerns the management of general information about accelerators and experiments at CERN. It discusses the problems of loss of information about complex evolving systems and derives a solution based on a distributed hypertext system

You can read the full proposal at CERN.

I’ve written and spoken about and presented on the history of the Web extensively over the years. So I simply wanted to acknowledge the Web and its profound effect on my life, and on the World, these last 30 years.

If you’re keen to delve a bit more deeply, I recently resurrected my Web History timeline project, an interactive timeline of some of the most important moments in the history of the Web and hypertext.

Contribute your milestones

I’ve also made it very easy to contribute. If you’re keen to contribute a milestone, there’s a simple form that will take a couple of minutes to complete. I’d love your thoughts as to key milestones in the technology and culture of the Web.

Great reading, every weekend.

We round up the best writing about the web and send it your way each Friday morning.
