Thanks to Fastly, our CDN partner for Code://Remote - Web Directions

Thanks to Fastly, our CDN partner for Code://Remote

28th August, 2020 @johnallsopp

When I first started developing for the web it was a pretty straightforward task. Sure we were still trying to work out how best to use HTML (then CSS, and later JavaScript) but we really didn’t worry much about builds, integration and deployment (editing in production was very much thing), let alone something as complex as Content Delivery Networks.

It does sound very quaint now I know.

But as we looked to deliver our conferences online, we knew content delivery was going to be vital. With hundred or more people logging in and streaming the conference, people located all across the world, and wanting to ensure they all got that content, that we were going to a lot of trouble and expense to shoot at 4K, as high quality as possible and as near to simultaneously as possible to recreate the shared experience of in-person events our CDN was going to be as important a piece of the technology puzzle as anything else.

One way I have long assessed technology companies is by the sort of people they employ. Great companies can identify great people, and also attract and maintain them.

One reason we knew Fastly was precisely because they had attracted people I really admire in the industry. Folks like Patrick Hamann, Andrew Betts, and Mark Nottingham, all of whom have made significant, indeed huge contributions to the Web and the development of standards, practices and technologies we all use every day.

So when it turned out our hosting company Platform.sh, and streaming provider both relied on Fastly for content delivery I feel it was more than a lucky circumstance.

As we head into the home straight of delivering our first online conference, we’re breathing a little easier knowing Fastly is there getting you the content.
