Speak at Web Directions events in 2018

Presenting on a topic is a great way to really get to understand it. Whether it's something you already know well, or something you think is important that you want to learn more about, you'll benefit from really digging deeply into it, and your audience will benefit from the knowledge you share.

Whether you've never spoken before, spoken internally at your company, at a meetup, or a conference, we're always looking for speakers for our conferences and other events.

In 2018, we have several conferences planned, across a range of topic areas. These fall broadly into two categories, Design and Development. If you're a Design professional, jump to details about design presentations. If your a front end engineer, jump to the associated section.

For Design focussed professionals

If you are a Design professional in the broadest sense, from Product to IxD to UX, Design Research to Content Strategy, Visual Design to Typography, we have two key events.

Web Directions Design in April in Melbourne is a single track Design focussed conference. Like most of our events, it mixes longer (45-50 minute sessions) with shorter (20 minute) sessions. Generally longer sessions are from invited experts, local and international, while shorter sessions are chosen from a Call For Presentations process, which is open from December 1st 2017 to February 2nd 2018.

Web Directions Summit takes place November 8 and 9, and features a Design track. The CFP for Summit opens December 1 2017, and closes early May 2018. It too features longer and shorter sessions.

We have a single form for proposing Design sessions at our conferences, as depending on the balance of the program, a session may in our estimation be better suited to one event or another. If you are only able to make one of these events, you can indicate this in the CFP form below.

What do we look for?

We are for the most part looking for shorter, 20 minute sessions. This format typically suits very focussed presentations, that zoom in on a single idea or concept. Recent sessions along these lines include:

From Web Directions Summit 2017

  • Style Guides, So Hot Right Now
  • Designing team culture: How good retros create amazing teams
  • Disruptive Design: The designer as an agent of change
  • Designing for extremes
  • Personalised Curiosity: Why and how machine learning can keep your users surprised and engaged
  • On Mobile, Context is King

From Respond 2017

  • Building a ubiquitous design language with components
  • Designing for Growth
  • Think aloud user testing - challenging established status quo
  • The (ancient) art of conversation: Styling beyond the GUI
  • Removing everything and having a crap UI

But in short–sessions on design concepts and techniques–if in doubt, drop us a line and we'll talk more.

For engineering focused professionals

As with our design conferences, our JavaScript, front-end development and engineering focussed conference Code, and engineering track at Summit mixes largely invited long sessions with shorter, 20 minute sessions drawn from our Call For Presentations.

Web Directions Code in August in Melbourne is a single track front end development focussed conference. Like most of our events, it mixes longer (45-50 minute sessions) with shorter (20 minute) sessions. Generally longer sessions are by invited experts, local and international, while shorter sessions are chosen from a Call For Presentations process, which is open from December 1st 2017 to April 27th 2018.

Web Directions Summit takes place November 8 and 9, and features a Design track. The CFP for Summit opens December 1 2017, and closes early May 2018.

We have a single form for proposing engineering sessions at our conferences, as depending on the balance of the program, a session may in our estimation be better suited to one event or another. If you are only able to make one of these events, you can indicate this in the CFP form.

What do we look for?

We are for the most part looking for shorter, 20 minute sessions. This format typically suits very focussed presentations, that zoom in on a single idea or concept. Recent sessions along these lines include:

From Web Directions Summit 2017

  • Workers of the Web Unite
  • Keep Betting on JavaScript
  • Meta Programming in JavaScript
  • 'Serverless' Back-end Development for Front-end Developers
  • Exploring Static Types: Writing Typesafe Code that Feels Like Real JavaScript
  • On CSS Architectures, Frameworks and Tooling

From Code 2017

  • The State of JavaScript in 2017
  • No More Awaiting for Async Functions
  • Modules in Motion
  • The State of Web Fonts
  • Traditional CSS at Scale(?)

But in short–sessions on under appreciated or emerging language features of CSS and JavaScript, browser APIs (for example the web payments API), concepts and techniques–if in doubt, drop us a line and we'll talk.

Whether you're a seasoned expert speaker, or never stood in front of an audience. we're keen to hear from you.

Below you'll find the open calls for presentations. We keep this form open all the time, but we do have cut off dates for upcoming events. For 2018 these dates are

  • Design Conference proposals close February 2nd
  • Code Conference proposals close 27th April
  • Summit proposals (design and engineering) close in May

About Us

Co-founded and now run by John Allsopp, Web Directions has for over a decade brought together leading developers, engineers, visual, IxD, UX and product designers, Art and Creative Directors, indeed everyone involved in producing web and digital products to learn from one another, and the World's leading experts across this vast field.

We spend our lives thinking about what comes next, keeping up with trends in technology, practices and processes, and filtering the hype, to make sure you don't miss trends that matter, and don't waste time on hype that doesn't.

We promise attending one of our events will leave you significantly better versed in the challenges you face day to day, and in solutions for addressing them.

In 2018, we'll be organising Design in Sydney Melbourne, Code and Code Leaders in Melbourne, and Web Directions Summit, AI and Culture in Sydney

John Allsopp

John Allsopp has been working on the Web for over 20 years. He's been responsible for innovative developer tools such as Style Master, X-Ray and many more. He's spoken at numerous conferences around the World and delivered dozens of workshops in that time as well.

His writing includes two books, including Developing With Web Standards and countless articles and tutorials in print and online publications.

His "A Dao of Web Design" published in 2000 is cited by Ethan Marcotte as a key influence in the development of Responsive Web Design, who's rightly acclaimed article in 2010 begins by quoting John in detail, and by Jeremy Keith as "a manifesto for anyone working on the Web".

Code of Conduct

For over a decade, we've worked hard to create inclusive, fun, inspring and safe events for the Web Industry.

As part of our commitment to these values, we've adopted a code of conduct for all involved: ourselves, our speakers, our partners and our audience.

If you have any concern or feedback, please don't hesitate to contact us.
