Episode 2: Plumbing & HVAC Marketing Profits Podcast - Creative Link Building

Welcome to Episode 2 of the Plumbing and HVAC Marketing Profits Podcast. I'm your host. My name is Dean Iodice. In today's show, we're going to talk about a creative link?building concept.

A little bit about link building. Link building has been going on since the beginning of Internet marketing. You have a website, so how do you get authority to that website? You do that by getting links to your site from sites that have high page authority. It sounds easy, but actually it's a little bit more complicated than one might think. Attracting links is a tough job.

About a year ago, getting links to your site was all about quantity of links. Google said, "Get more links, and your site will rank higher," and so of course what Google says got abused. Everyone was going out and getting hundreds and hundreds, if not thousands of links pointing to their website from all kinds of sources ?? blog rolls, other blogs, link farms, all these sites that were unrelated to their industry.

Then one day, Google swept in and said, "Nuh?uh, this is abuse. You're doing it wrong," and they penalized a lot of sites. You might have heard that sites got basically taken out of the Google Index, businesses went out of business, and it was a big hurrah.

Times have changed, and link building is still very important, but it's not about quantity anymore. It's truly about quality. What are considered quality links? If you're a plumbing and HVAC company, a quality link would be a link from an industry?related site.

In other words, a plumbing supply house, the BBB, a directory like Yelp!, or Yellow Pages, or Angie's List, another plumbing company maybe in another city, a friend of yours. Maybe you're a plumbing company. Get a link from an HVAC company. Get a link from your suppliers, if you sell or you resell Moen faucets, why not get a link on the Moen faucets as an authorized distributor? It's a great link.

These are the type of links you need to be going after. It's a bit of a challenge at some times. Sometimes you can buy your way in by joining the local chamber of commerce. It's an excellent link to have. It has very high authority, and it would cost you $200 a year to be a part of the chamber of commerce, but it might very well be worth the money for the authority that the chamber of commerce website is passing along to you.

Today, I want to talk about one thing that you can do to attract very high?authority websites, and also might be able to get a little business out of it on the other side. I want to talk about planning an educational event at your business.

If you're a plumbing company, and a lot of plumbing companies now have showrooms. That's really cool. You have a showroom, a sales staff in there, and you're showing off faucets and bathroom fixtures and kitchen fixtures. This is a great opportunity to have an open house, maybe on a Saturday morning, where you can put out a bunch of invites, and you have a few people come in, whatever, 5, 10, 15, 20, even 1 person.

They come in, and you get to show them all the new Moen faucets, or all the New American Standard this, or all the new water heaters, whatever your product is. It doesn't matter what the product is, it's just a matter of getting people in the door for multiple reasons.

Number one, these people could be customers and buy from you. They might just be there learning, and buy from you in the future. The main thing is capturing that great link juice from a high?authority website. What is that high?authority website?

It is your local newspaper website. Your city newspaper, anything like that, that allows you to advertise an event on it. What you do is you go to the events section of the newspaper's website, and you add your event. When you're adding your event, you're adding all your contact information, when it is, a little description about the event, your email, and a link back to your website.

Why is this good, is because city websites generally have very high page authority, and when you have an event on their page, and you have a link back to your website, these are great links to get.

When the event ends, obviously, the link may go away, so you'd want to do this at a little bit of frequency. Maybe you do it once a month. It's maybe one hour a month, on a Saturday morning. The good thing about it is you're getting people in the door, so you're exposing your business to some customers, but the main focus of this task is to get that link on the local newspaper website that can pass some really good page authority to you.

It takes a little bit of setup to do, it takes a little planning. I would give myself about a month to get this thing underway, but all in all, at the end, you will have a nice little event on a monthly basis. You'll have a high?quality link from a high authority site, and the more you continue to do this, the more links you get, the more page authority gets passed, and guess what? You now have a website that is rising in the search engines, because you're getting some good quality links pointing to it.

I hope that helps. I hope you try it out, and if you do, drop me a line. I hope you enjoy this podcast. I do it to help people out in the plumbing and HVAC industry, and I hope it helps you.
