Australian Digital Agencies

Current Feature Agency: Small Studio

Tell us a little of the history of Small Studio

Small Studio founded in April 2007 by Paul Kotz, Tim Fouhy and Tim O’Neill, as a resource for clients who wanted great talent in a smaller agency context. Since then the company has worked with a range of great clients, seeing a number of startups grow into successful businesses and helping more established collaborators go from strength to strength. Paul now runs the business with a talented team of designers and developers, with the same attitude the company started with - produce world-class work in a nimble little setup.

What are some projects you're particularly proud of?

  • Our work with CSIRO, because we developed a brand (for AdaptNRM) that we then rolled out to a rather large digital project and substantial print work. We met the challenge of being beautiful, usable, scientifically accurate and adhering to style guides head-on, and it worked.
  • The suite of projects with Alfred Health, because our clients are so savvy and enthusiastic about e-health. Budget permitting, there is a lot of good work already done and a lot of potential for more innovation. It’s a good thing we’re resourceful and enjoy working to limitations!
  • Story Box Library, because we started with them when it was a teaser page and Pozible campaign, and now it’s a sophisticated video-on-demand service that is delivering great content and is viable - the perfect startup!

Any awards?

  • Awwwards site of the day, December 13 2011 - Small Studio Website
  • Museums Australia Multimedia and Publications Design Award (Website Level A) 2010 - NETS Victoria Website
  • Winner, Australian Mobile and App Awards 2014 (Medical) - Alfred ICU Waiting Room App

What's your ideal project? Client?

Our ideal project is an adventure that’s well-planned, well-resourced and takes us somewhere previously uncharted. On those sorts of projects we end up learning about new aspects of our clients’ industries, produce work that’s worthwhile and surprise ourselves.

Our ideal client is the sort that wants to explore, and trusts us to join them, and sometimes to lead the way.

Anything else you'd like to tell us?

It’s a great feeling to solve a problem, be it technical or creative. When presented with these challenges we dig into our past experience, work with the tools we have at hand and allow our collective subconscious to make unlikely connections.
