The Bureau of Meteorology is Australia's national weather, climate and water agency. Its expertise and services assist Australians in dealing with the harsh realities of their natural environment, including droughts, floods, fires, storms, tsunami and tropical cyclones. Through regular forecasts, warnings, monitoring and advice spanning the Australian region and Antarctic territory, the Bureau provides one of the fundamental and most widely used services of government.

The Bureau contributes to national social, economic, cultural and environmental goals by providing observational, meteorological, hydrological and oceanographic services and by undertaking research into science and environment related issues in support of its operations and services.

The successful applicant will be involved with development and technical support of web-based data visualisation tools (including MetEye) using open source packages, such as Openlayers and MapServer, to display geospatial weather information in a publicly accessible format utilising the latest advances in web delivery.

The successful applicant will possess:

• Solid knowledge/experience in web administration, web development and the application of government and industry standards;

• Extensive experience in developing Geospatial Web Applications using a Mapserver, OpenLayers stack with knowledge of Mapcache, WMS and WFS protocols and OGC data standards.

• Demonstrable experience in the use of JavaScript, ExtJS, GeoExt, jQuery, JSON, XML, (X)HTML/CSS, Python, PHP.

• Prior experience in hosting and maintaining Git repositories.

• Sound knowledge of RHEL Linux, Perl, bash and korn shell scripting.

• High level communication skills, both orally and in writing, excellent interpersonal skills and ability to work independently and in a team environment.
