What Do You Know Brisbane — Wrap-​​up

For the third instalment of the September 2013 What Do You Know series we were off to Brisbane. It was another warm night The Exchange Hotel, which got off to a very amusing start with Andy Fitzsimon’s “Brilliance and BS of the UX Business”. You had to be there. Except maybe if you are a UX person, in which case maybe you shouldn’t have :). All in good fun.

Then we were lucky enough to have Colin Gourlay from the ABC present for us, fresh from his recent experiences with working on ABC Online’s election coverage. Colin spoke about reusable responsive charts with D3.js, focussing on how they used the masses of data from the ABC’s Vote Compass. You can see all the results from Vote Compass here. Colin did a write up of the presentation, and encouraged everyone to check out this article, Reusability with D3.

Next we had a few words from the most excellent people at SilverStripe, about their innovative opensource CMS framework. SilverStripe were kind enough to support the event and make all the great food and drink possible — big ups to SilverStripe!

Straight after the break Anna Gerber took us on a tour of The Internet of Everything. This is such an exciting area! The best way to dive in is to get along to some of the local meetups. Here’s a few that Anna suggested.

James gave an amazing closing keynote at Web Directions South a few years back called Waving at the Machines — do yourself a favour and watch the video over lunch some time.

But I digress…

Closing out the night we had Davy Rennie, who’s recently moved to Brisbane as Creative Director at Brightlabs, who provided a nice counterpoint to our opening presentation with an ode to pen and paper as the responsive designer’s best friend.
