A change to the Web Directions South 2013 program

With so many moving parts, in particular international speakers coming from all corners of the globe, there’s always the distinct possibility that not everything will work out perfectly.
So, sadly, for totally understandable reasons, one of the speakers we were really looking forward to seeing at Web Directions South, Michaelangelo D’Agostino, who was a data scientist on the campaign to re-elect Barack Obama in 2012, can’t make it out to Australia (we’re still keen to get him for an upcoming event some time in the future!).
Meanwhile, a real theme has been emerging with the conference (and of course around designing and developing for the Web more broadly), around animation. We’ve got a fantastic Design track session on the principles of animation as applied to User Interfaces, from Pasquale D’Silva, and a workshop on animation put together by Pasquale, along with our own John Allsopp. John’s been increasingly interested in animation when it comes to web based UIs, and written extensively on CSS Transitions and Animations, and CSS Transforms here at the site, and developed tools to help you learn, and explore animations, and transforms as well. So, it made sense to accompany Pasquale’s Design session with one from John in the Developer track, focussing on implementation using CSS.
We’ve featured animation a couple of times in previous Web Directions conferences, and of course, showcased the Web’s animation capabilities in our opening title sequences from Designer/Developer extraordinaire, Cameron Adams, but whereas in the past it’s been a bleeding edge technology, support for these technologies is now solid across all modern browsers and devices. Animation is no longer a “nice to have”, but increasingly a “must have” aspect of modern web based experiences. Come and learn about how to do it right at Web Directions South
