Web Developer with design flair at Queen's College

One of the leading University of Melbourne residential colleges is seeking a web developer with design flair to lead and develop the extensive College Intranet and Internet sites.

Job Specifics:

- Position Title: Web Developer

- Reports To: IT Manager

- Location: Queen's College, Parkville

- Employment Status: Full time - 38 hrs a week. Start ASAP

Background

Located on the main campus in picturesque Parkville, Queen's College is an academic residential college affiliated with the University of Melbourne. Founded in 1886, the College has grown to serve a community comprised of undergraduates, postgraduates and senior people in both the Academy and Professions. An extensive network of Alumni, nationally and globally, is closely linked to the College's operations.

Position Description

IT at Queen's is in a period of rapid development and the web developer role is very much a technical hands-on role. It consists of project work (60%), maintenance (25%), and liaising with students and staff (15%). It is ideally suited to someone who enjoys all aspects of web design (creative and technical), responds well to challenges and is keen to show initiative in developing new skills and solutions.

The three strategic goals of IT in this role are:

- Enhance the College community (via our intranet and online tools)

- Improve business efficiency

- Generate new revenue streams

Duties and Responsibilities

- Maintain/Develop existing websites

- Lead the development and implementation of web tools/websites to enhance the College community, generate additional revenue and/or streamline how the College operates.

- Work closely with students and staff to gain an understanding of their IT needs and to assist them where needed.

- Work with the IT Manager to maintain, develop and promote all aspects of IT within College.

- Investigate 'web' technologies and report to the IT Manager; test new ways to improve the functionality, usability and navigation of the College websites.

Essential Skills and Capabilities

- Minimum 2 years demonstrated professional experience in web design and development. We will consider graduates - however, you must be able to demonstrate results and experience beyond that of uni assignments/projects

- Experience in developing database driven websites and/or web-based tools

Mandatory core skills required:

- HTML, CSS, PHP, Postgres/MySQL or equivalent, Photoshop, javascript and jQuery, SVN or similar.

Desirable skills:

- Creative design/graphic design skills, Smarty templates, Wordpress, HTML5, CSS3

- Ability to work with minimal supervision and show initiative

- Demonstrated ability to work to a schedule and estimate the duration of a project.

- Ability to identify areas of improvement and apply creative and innovative solutions

- Enthusiasm and belief in the ability of IT solutions to deliver new ways of generating additional revenue streams and building communities.

- Someone who enjoys interacting with university students

- Someone who enjoys both technical and creative aspects of web development

- Someone with a portfolio demonstrating excellent visual design (layout, color and typography) and clean, compliant code

Working Relationships

The Web Developer will be part of the IT Team comprising the IT Manager and several students who provide basic technical support. The IT Manager reports to the Vice-Master of the College.

Remuneration

Remuneration for this position will be dependant on experience.
