ABC Innovation develops and manages the award winning website abc.net.au, attracting over 26 million weekly accesses and growing. We also deliver innovative applications for the internet and other platforms including mobile across the ABC. Strategic Development has been responsible for initiating such projects as iView and Gallipoli: The First Day as well as ABC iPhone and iPad applications.

We are looking for an experienced web applications developer to join our team and play a lead role in continuing to explore new and innovative ways of bringing ABC content to our audience.

To be successful in this role, you will have extensive experience working in high volume, high traffic environments. You will also possess highly advanced skills and knowledge in analysis, design and programming, with the ability to advise on the best technical solutions within a highly complex technical environment.

This position will require you to have superior HTML, CSS and JavaScript skills as well as significant professional experience in PHP (object oriented PHP5 in particular) and J2EE environments.

You are an energetic, dynamic and collaborative team member with great communication (verbal and written) and interpersonal skills and a genuine enthusiasm for digital and pride in the quality of your work.

Key Accountabilities:

• Provide technical leadership and advice within ABC Innovation’s Strategic Development team.

• As part of a project team, provide analysis, design and development of complex, re-usable digital applications and functionality for a broad range of uses across various ABC digital properties.

• Maintain a professional approach to documentation, including drafting initial functional specifications documents and project documentation for ongoing reference once a project is completed

• Maintain a high level of awareness of best practice in the industry and web standards for areas such as emerging standards, SEO, accessibility etc.

• Improve the quality of output by contributing to the development of best practices and development standards.

• Research and critically appraise new and emerging technologies and platforms, and be prepared to learn new skills.

• Advocate and apply ABC values and all relevant ABC policies and procedures including Equity & Diversity and OH&S

Key Capabilities/Qualifications/Experience (Selection Criteria)

1. Tertiary qualifications in a computing related field and extensive industry experience in web applications development is essential.

2. Superior HTML, CSS and JavaScript skills, including working with third party APIs, with experience implementing complex designs across multiple platforms and browsers in a high traffic environment.

3. Industry experience building enterprise-grade applications in both PHP and J2EE environments. PHP experience should include predominantly object oriented PHP5 with some experience working within standard frameworks (Kohana and/or CodeIgniter preferred). J2EE experience should include skills in some or all of Spring Framework, JSP, JSTL or JSF.

4. Demonstrated experience leading technical development throughout the full lifecycle of analysis, developing, implementation and support to ensure achievement of milestones and goals, with extensive experience designing both frontend and backend solutions.

5. Ability to collaborate effectively using well-developed interpersonal, strong oral and written communication skills and proven ability to convey or translate complex technical information to target audiences is essential.

6. Highly developed organisational skills with a commitment to meeting deadlines and an understanding of project management principles, application development methodologies and experience in the use of quality processes and testing.
