ABC Innovation develops and manages the award winning website abc.net.au, attracting over 26 million weekly accesses and growing. We also deliver innovative applications for the internet and other platforms including mobile across the ABC.

We are looking for an experienced PHP developer to join our team to work on an exciting new project based on mapping crowd sourced data for live events in real time.

This is a position for someone with strong PHP skills (3-5 years object oriented PHP5) and experience with one or more PHP frameworks (particularly Kahona or CodeIgniter). Python skills and experience would also be a distinct advantage.

At the front end, solid HTML, CSS and JavaScript skills are essential, and experience working with map data and mapping APIs will be highly advantageous.

You'll be working in a large organisation in a web environment that attracts large volumes of traffic, so experience optimising code to extract out every last kilobyte is essential.

You are an energetic, dynamic and collaborative team member with an ability to direct and advise on the implementation of front end solutions and web standards. You have a strong customer focus, and great communication (verbal and written) and interpersonal skills and a genuine enthusiasm for the web and pride in the quality of your work.

Key Accountabilities:

• As part of a project team, develop complex, re-usable web based applications and functionality for a broad range of uses across various ABC online properties.

• Work closely with project managers/producers and design teams to develop, test and deliver interactive applications which are 'best of breed' for abc.net.au.

• Maintain a professional approach to documentation, including drafting initial functional specifications documents and project documentation for ongoing reference once a project is completed.

• Maintain a high level of awareness of best practice in the industry and web standards for areas such as emerging standards, SEO, accessibility etc.

• Be prepared to learn new skills and work on new and emerging platforms

• Advocate and apply ABC values and all relevant ABC policies and procedures including Equity & Diversity and OH&S;

Key Capabilities/Qualifications/Experience (Selection Criteria)

1. Formal qualifications in Computer Science, Information Technology, a similar related field or equivalent industry experience.

2. Significant industry experience building applications using PHP, predominantly as object oriented PHP5. Demonstrated experience working within standard frameworks (Kahona and/or CodeIgniter preferred) and Python an advantage.

3. Demonstrated experience working with mapping APIs such as Google maps.

4. Demonstrated experience writing advanced JavaScript with strong experience using at least one JavaScript framework (such as jQuery). Experience and knowledge in the techniques of asynchronous JavaScript and XML and/or JSON (i.e. AJAX/AJAJ).

5. Excellent (X)HTML and CSS skills with experience implementing complex designs across multiple platforms and browsers in a high traffic environment.

6. Demonstrated experience of W3C (X)HTML standards and WAI Accessibility guidelines, an understanding of SEO principles and the Dublin Core guidelines.

7. Strong written and verbal communication skills with extensive experience working with design/IA teams and back end technical teams. Strong problem solving skills to find the best and most efficient solutions to complex technical front end challenges
