Role purpose

We need a good Front End Developer to join the ABC Radio Multiplatform team building genuinely interesting, high profile projects.

The job is mostly working on ABC Open , a project to bring social media and regional users together. We’re working on geography, participation and the semantic web technologies.

Focusing the design and development team into 2 strands for both branded experiences and product development. This position will be part of the bespoke development strand, focusing on implementing custom views to represent audience contributions to the ABC Open website.

Context

The team feels like a start up, and has a commitment to building really great web experiences for our audience. We build within an agile methodology, and will be continuously adding tools, features and services to the website throughout its life cycle.

The immediate team has six people combining design and development skills, working with a project manager and an editorial team.

It’s a six-eight month contract duration starting between 7 and 21 February.

Initially the position will be required to work externally, providing your own equipment, internet connection and software as well as being able to attend occasional team meetings and planning sessions at our office. From March/April 2011 they will be embedded in our office with ABC hardware, software and network provided.

The office is in Ultimo, near Central Station, Chinatown and a walk through the Devonshire Tunnel to Surry Hills.

Key Outputs

  • 1. Interactive web page development using advanced javascript jQuery framework
  • 2. Implementation of bespoke page views form high fidelity designs to html 5 & css 3 pages using PHP within agile development framework
  • 3. Adhere to ABC accessibility and usability guidelines in implementation
  • 4. Documentation of methodology and standards used for each bespoke view

    Required Knowledge and Experience

  • 1. Extensive experience writing advanced JavaScript with strong experience using at least one JavaScript framework (such as jQuery). Experience and knowledge in the techniques of asynchronous JavaScript and XML and/or JSON (i.e. AJAX/AJAJ).
  • 2. Excellent (X)HTML and CSS skills with experience implementing complex designs across multiple platforms and browsers in a high traffic environment, including experience with cutting up Photoshop designs with an eye for detail.
  • 3. Experience of W3C (X)HTML standards and WAI Accessibility guidelines, an understanding of SEO principles and the Dublin Core guidelines.
  • 4. Experience with PHP.
  • 5. Use of Project Management tools such as basecamp or Jira Studio for collaborative development workflow and task tracking

  • 1. Work closely with Team leader, project manager, technical lead and design teams to develop, test and deliver interactive front end views.
  • 2. Liaise with back end programmers to integrate, test and debug front end functionality with back end applications and databases.
  • 3. Maintain a professional approach to documentation.
  • 4. Strong problem solving skills to find the best and most efficient solutions to complex technical front end challenge.
  • 5. Strong written and verbal communication skills with experience working with design/IA teams and back end technical teams.
