The ABC is launching a new online initiative that aims to serve people with disabilities. The new site will combine ABC content with lively contributions from the community.

We are looking for an experienced online editor or journalist to lead this project. The job is to lead discussion about the way disability impacts upon peoples’ lives and the community. The site aims to be informative, but also provocative and entertaining.

The ABC particularly welcomes applications from people with disabilities.

Accountabilities

• Develop an agenda-setting online destination for audiences reflecting the lives and experiences of people with disabilities and related topics and issues.

• Commission unique material for the site as well as write editorial and analytical pieces which provoke discussion.

• Day to day publication of content which will include liaising with ABC broadcasters and with external writers, checking and proofing copy, helping enter content into the online publishing system and exercising quality control in the presentation of aggregated content.

• Maintain high editorial standards with full regard to ABC editorial policies.

• Advocate and apply ABC values and all relevant ABC policies and procedures, including Equity & Diversity and OH&S.

Selection Criteria

1. Wide knowledge of different kinds of disability, engagement with disability issues and policy and a deep understanding of the experiences and views of people with disabilities as individuals and within the community.

2. Proven experience in content production or journalism (broadcast, print or online) with highly advanced editorial skills and judgment. Proven ability to develop and produce accessible and relevant content at an advanced level.

3. Experience as a commissioning editor with the capacity to build a stable of contributors and to build a compelling site which will attract a community of regular users.

4. Proven capacity to write highly readable and topical analysis at short notice.

5 Familiarity with publishing techniques and tools for website creation. An understanding of accessibility standards is particularly important.

6. Proven ability to work effectively under pressure and to tight deadlines. Proven team player.

7. An understanding of and commitment to the ABC’s aims, objectives and workplace values, together with relevant policies and guidelines including Editorial Policies, Equity & Diversity and OH&S.
