In this role you will own Atlassian's production systems including customer facing and mission critical applications. You will be responsible for monitoring, maintaining and optimising these systems as well as assisting our development teams in investigating stability and performance issues.

You'll need to be a Systems Engineer par excellence, with a passion for making systems run smoothly, a habit of improving the status quo, excellent technical skills and communication skills to match. 

To be successful in this role you must enjoy planning and managing fast-moving projects involving production systems!

What You'll Do

Planning and executing projects around our critical production systems

Monitoring, maintaining and optimising those systems

Working closely with developers and other staff to solve operational issues with our applications

Scheduling, coordinating and communicating maintenance windows for critical systems

Coordination with our colocation provider

Ensuring the security of our critical systems

Taking proactive action to resolve issues before they even exist (cf. Skynet) 

Key Skills

Expert ability in provisioning, maintaining, triaging and optimising Java web applications (we really mean it. Can you explain class loading, log4j, the difference between ajp and http, and which garbage collector the server jvm uses by default?)

Understanding of Java specific performance issues and their resolution, e.g. garbage collection issues 

Very good written and verbal communication skills

Proficiency in one or more scripting languages such as bash, Perl, Python, or Ruby.

Ability to maintain, monitor and optimise production database servers (primarily PostgreSQL)

Ability to administer mission-critical Linux production servers

Ability to carry out monitoring and performance metrics analysis using common monitoring tools. E.g. Nagios, Cacti, Hyperic or others

Ability to set up alerts-based monitoring

Experience with local and wide-area networking in a Cisco environment

Additional Preferred Skills and Experience

Experience with RedHat Enterprise Linux (RHEL)

Experience with Dell's line of server hardware

Experience with Cisco's line of switches and routers

Experience with VoIP systems

Experience with storage technologies e.g. SANs, iSCSI etc

Knowledge of WAN networking technologies e.g. Routing protocols and VPNs

Experience with hosted environments and remotely collocated production systems 

Experience with Atlassian products

Typical Experience

3+ years as a systems administrator

Responsibility for mission-critical enterprise applications on Unix operating systems

Experience supporting java-based web applications
