The UK Department for Transport is looking for a suitably qualified person to fill a temporary two to three month position with their Web Team.

The position is based in London and applicants will need to start work during January 2010. The position can be offered at a PB2L, PB3L or PB4L level depending on the applicant’s skills and experience.

Job Description

To work systematically fixing XHTML code, broken links, accessibility problems, and tagging and optimising PDF files throughout a large Government website.

To validate your fixes against appropriate standards and regularly report on the quality and quantity of the work you have completed.

Essential criteria

  • a thorough understanding of methods and techniques to ensure compliance with online accessibility requirements
  • demonstrated practical experience in coding and validating web pages to WCAG 1.0 A and AA standards
  • extensive experience using Adobe Acrobat Professional
  • demonstrated experience tagging PDF files for accessibility and optimising PDF files for the web (creating new PDFs from Word plus fixing existing untagged and scanned PDF files)
  • highly proficient XHTML coding skills and demonstrated practical experience validating and fixing code and broken links
  • experience working with content management systems
  • ability to manage high workloads and work under pressure while maintaining attention to detail
  • ability to work as part of a small team with minimal supervision

Desirable criteria

  • knowledge of Central office of Information web guidelines
  • http://www.coi.gov.uk/guidance.php?page=188 (TG102 Web Content Accessibility Guidelines (WCAG) 1.0 and 2.0, TG102 delivering inclusive websites, TG109 minimum technical standards, TG110 making PDF files usable and accessible)
  • experience working on Government websites
  • experience working with Morello 5.4 content management system
  • experience working with Sitemorse
