Introducing Australian Web Week | Web Directions

Maxine and I are really excited and proud to announce Australian Web Week, October 2 to 9, a showcase of the strength and creativity of the Australian Web industry. It’s a project we’ve been planning for years, and working hard on for months now.

The Design industry has its Design Festivals, Fashion has Fashion Week, now our industry also has a week to come together, acknowledge and celebrate our successes, connect, learn and share.

Already we’ve got well over a dozen events lined up for the week. Many are free, though they are likely to be very popular, so make sure you RSVP for events you really want to attend. To be the first to hear news, follow @webweek on twitter, or sign up to our mailing list.

The centrepiece of the week is the first ever exhibition by the amazingly talented YiYing Lu, designer of the iconic Twitter Fail Whale. YiYing is working in collaboration with Sydney Augmented Reality pioneers MOB to put together a show that’s both accessible, and incredibly innovative. The show kicks off on Friday October 2nd with the Web Week opening night party, at the Pyrmont Bridge Hotel, and continues at the Hotel until Tuesday the 6th. It transfers to the Web Directions conference for October 8th and 9th.

Other events confirmed for the week include

• A Mozilla Labs night featuring Ben Galbraith, developer of Bespin and founder of Ajaxian.com. It’s free, but numbers are strictly limited, register now.
• The hugely anticipated return of WebJam
• Common Ground, celebrating the Commons on Flickr at the PowerHouse Museum
• Ignite Sydney
• WE Rock, an evening for educators focussing on Web Education. A free event, but places are limited, so register now.
• Web Futures, a student focussed event, mapping out career pathways and opportunities for University and TAFE students. Register now for this free, limited places event.
• Numerous Parties including Web Blast, The Opening Night Party, and closing party for Web Directions.
• Social Climbing - indoor climbing for web folks - experienced or the complete opposite. Get vertical, and help break the geek stereotype. Register here.

The Week begins with the Oz-IA conference October 2 and 3, and also features Web Directions workshops October 6 and 7, and Australia’s Web Industry Conferences, Web Directions, October 8 and 9.
