About the Job

Internal Systems is a small, enthusiastic team within Atlassian that has the goal of creating and enhancing systems that help the company scale. Examples are our online ordering system, customer databases, customer portal, CRM system and even small hacks that help the company operate.

We provide business analysis services to the Sales, Marketing, HR, Finance and Operations side of the business, then find or create systems that help them achieve their goals. Thus, our success is directly related to their success!

We focus on writing Java-based systems or using 3rd-party hosted systems (eg Salesforce.com, NetSuite) to deliver services. We love using open-source systems where they meet our business needs – for example, all our databases run on PostgreSQL. Infrastructure management is outsourced, so we get to spend more time on making great systems.

Due to ever-increasing demand for our services, we are seeking an additional team member in Sydney to extend our Business Analysis capabilities. Reporting to the Senior Business Analyst and working side-by-side with the team’s Developers, the main responsibilities for the role will be:

  • Business Analysis
  • Reporting
  • Application Administration

Business Analysis

In additional to writing great software, Atlassian also has active Sales, Support and Customer Service operations, plus business support areas such as HR and Finance. It will be the responsibility of the Business Analyst to understand and improve business systems and processes used throughout the company. This will involve working with the Senior Business Analyst and the other team members to devise and deliver smart, efficient systems and processes.

You’ll need to interpret requests from internal customers to discover underlying business requirements, so a background in Business Analysis will be very useful, as would be an MBA or similar qualifications. You’ll need to be the sort of person who always asks “Why?” to discover the real reason behind requests. You’ll need a technical background to understand how IT systems can deliver appropriate business benefits and you will maintain hands-on involvement with those systems.

You’ll also have the chance to define information repositories, improve data flows between systems and recommend new processes that will benefit both the business and our customers.

Reporting

A major component of this role will be to understand information flows within the business and assist with the production of Reports and Statistics such as:

  • How many customers buy multiple products from us, and what is the typical order of purchase?
  • What is the renewal rate of customers by geographic region and product line?
  • Is there a correlation between new version releases and sales revenue?
  • What is the forecast demand for support services?

You’ll need to interact with internal customers to discover their true requirements, which might be more complex than initially perceived. Then, you’ll gather, extract and manipulate data from multiple databases to transform it into useful information that can be used by the business. Experience in SQL and Reporting/Statistical Tools will be required to successfully deliver results.

Application Administration

The Business Analyst will also be involved in the on-going usage and administration of the systems we create and implement. This would involve:

  • Supporting systems
  • Enhancing systems based on business requests
  • Resolving problems and errors

While this is not a Developer role, hands-on development experience will be extremely useful in being able to maintain and improve our systems. We are a very technical team, so expect to get your hands dirty as you manage and maintain systems using technologies such as SQL, JavaScript and Salesforce.com.

Plus, since we’re a small team, you’ll also have the chance to influence our choice of technologies, system designs and preferred snack food. Teamwork is not only important, it is core to the way we work.

Responsibilities & Skills

Responsibilities:

  • Evaluate business needs and contribute to the design, development and implementation of a solution
  • Gather, document and interpret business requirements for analytic reporting
  • Recommend and implement improvements in business processes and IT systems

Required skills:

  • 8+ years working in a business environment
  • Experience working as a Business Analyst, Developer or similar role
  • Experience with SQL and Reporting/Statistical Tools (we do NOT use Microsoft technologies)
  • Strong analytical and problem solving skills, with an attention to detail

Preferred skills:

  • Process mapping
  • Excellent written and verbal presentation skills
  • MBA or Business degree
  • Software development experience

Read what some of our team members have to say about life at Atlassian:

“The culture is so refreshing compared to my previous employment in large corporations. The openness of information, the willingness to use new technology (such as using wikis instead of Word documents), daily stand-up meetings to promote communication without the drudgery of long meetings, the honesty of the product offering—they make me love coming to work each day.”

— John Rotenstein, internal systems

“It’s been fun from the first interview … I still can’t quite believe that this qualifies as ‘work’.”

— Kate Ellingburg, sr. developer

“Working for Atlassian honestly makes me wonder why other companies can’t get it right . . . this is how work should be.”

— Michael Seager, sales team member

  • Your experience specifically relevant to the Business Analyst role
  • Evidence of how you have made a positive contribution to corporate success in your previous roles

Any applications without the above information, and any that are ‘generic’ in nature (i.e they look like they’ve been sent to multiple companies), will not qualify for consideration. We take our working environment and respect for fellow Atlassians seriously, and ask that you do the same.
