Web Directions South 2007 » Blog Archive » New blog at the Powerhouse Museum

Just launched is a new blog at Australia’s own Powerhouse Museum - Photo of the Day, showcasing some of the incredible photography created on a day by day basis by the museum’s photographers. Here you will see photography that goes far beyond that which simply documents museum’s collection, or is used for image sales.

Seb Chan, who gave a great presentation called Social Media and Government 2.0 at Web Directions South this year, is manager of web services at the museum. In announcing the blog he writes:

The other notable feature of Photo of the Day is that we are using our Flickr account to store the images. Each image is uploaded to Flickr, extensively tagged and where possible, also geotagged.

Already we’re connecting with other professional photographers on Flickr (and we’ve only just launched!). This is a good example of how a museum can utilise an existing content community (Flickr) to generate extra exposure for and conversations around its media assets.

I think this last comment has applications well beyond museums - we could all be thinking of ways we can leverage our businesses sideways into other communities.
