Web Directions South 2007 » Web Hack

In the tradition on Mac Hack, and more recently the Hack Days in London and elsewhere, this year, Web Directions brings you Web Hack, on Saturday 29th September (the day after the Web Directions conference).

What the heck is a Hack Day?

Years ago, Mac Hack was a conference for Mac developers, encouraging and celebrating cool hacks for the Mac. Sadly long defunct, the concept has recently been picked up, and dusted off by a number of people, most famously with the Hack Days supported by Yahoo!

Yeah, but what happens?

The premise of Web Hack is simple - people who love building stuff for the web get together in one place and time, and build cool stuff - a new mashup, a new webapp, a geo enabled uploading handbag - whatever takes their fancy.

At the end of the day each individual or group presents their hack to the crowd (and a panel of judges), in 90 seconds, with great prizes for the winners.

Then the day wraps up with a party.

But I am not a hacker

All kinds of projects need all kinds off skills. It’s not all hardcore Ruby on Rails and Ajax. Design and illustration skills, writing, front end design, photography, woodworking, hairdressing, whatever you love doing you’ll find a way to use. There’ll also be all kinds of things happening throughout the day, so there’ll be plenty to keep you occupied.

OK, so what kinds of thing do people build?

Check out some of the projects at the Open Hack Day in 2006.

What do I bring?

Bring your brains, your ideas, and probably some kind of device for developing with. Bring your team of crack hackers, or just team up with others on the day.

What will be provided?

We’ll provide

  • a venue
  • a wifi network
  • refreshments and caffeinated beverages
  • lots of experts to help you out with ideas, provide advice about everything from CSS to Javacript to Django and Rails
  • entertainment

What does it cost?

Nada, nix, nothing. That’s right, it’s free as in beer. Hmmm, come to think of it, there may even be free beer there as well. Just one more reason to come along.

When is it on?

Saturday September 29th 2007, 10am- 6pm (then a party ’til late)

Where is it on?

The venue is still to be confirmed, we just wanted to let you know that Web Hack is definitely going to happen on that Saturday directly after the conference, so if you’re coming from out of town you can make travel arrangements with this in mind.
